Scholarship

“To encourage and assist worthy students pursuing a career in the stewardship of animals.”

The Lawrence A. Ackerman Scholarship was established by the Fort Wayne Zoological Society in 1991 to honor the distinguished career of the late Dr. Larry Ackerman. In his 30 years of service in private practice and as the Zoo’s veterinarian, Dr. Ackerman became known for his professionalism, compassion, and generosity. Dr. Ackerman himself received some special financial assistance early in his college career. This scholarship will assist other deserving students in a similar way.

The Scholarship was established in 1992 by the family of the late Dr. Larry Ackerman who served as the zoo’s veterinarian. Contributions to the fund are always welcome and may be mailed to Ackerman Scholarship Fund, 3411 Sherman Blvd., Fort Wayne, In 46808. Contributions are tax deductible.

The Lawrence A. Ackerman Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior based on the applicant’s character, commitment to the stewardship of animals, financial need, scholastic achievement, and promise. Graduating high school seniors in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, and Whitley counties in Indiana are eligible to apply. Finalists will be invited to meet with the Scholarship Committee for an in-person interview on a specified date. A one-time $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to one student each year.
