Kunekune Pig

I LIVE IN NEW ZEALAND

While the exact origin of kunekune pigs isn’t known, they share traits with other pig breeds found in Asia and South America. It is believe that ancestors of the kunekune pig were brought to New Zealand in the 1800s.

I AM AN HERBIVORE

While most pigs are naturally omnivores, kunekune pigs are herbivores. They tend to be grazers, meaning they eat a variety of vegetation such as grass, hay and grains.

KUNEKUNE PIGS ARE SOCIAL

Kunekune pigs are very social beings and are happiest when with other pigs. They tend to form very close relationships with other pigs.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Kunekune (prounounced “KOO-nee KOO-nee”) pigs get their name from the Maori language and translates to “fat and round.” The Maori are people native to the island of New Zealand.

I AM IMPORTANT TO MY ECOSYSTEM

Because of their herbivorous diet, pigs play a very important role in bringing about balance to the vegetation around them. At times, they will dig into the soil for underground plant material. This action helps softened the ground and allows for new plants to grow and thrive. They also aid in seed dispersal which helps bring about biodiversity within their habitat.
