About

I LIVE IN NORTH AMERICA

The California sea lion is native to the the Pacific Ocean along the West Coast of North America. Although their name suggests they are native to the state of California, they can actually be found in shallow, coastal waters all up and down the West Coast from Vancouver, Canada, to Baja California.

I AM A CARNIVORE

California sea lions are carnivorous animals and will eat a variety of fish and other marine animals including squid, mackerel, and sardines.

CALIFORNIA SEA LIONS ARE SOCIAL

The California sea lion is a very social animal both in and out of the water, and they can be found hanging out in large groups. They are known to be very vocal and like to communicate with one another through barks, grunts, and growls.

LUNGS OF STEEL

California sea lions have very strong lungs and are able to hold their breathe underwater for up to 10 minutes. This ability is useful when they spend extended amounts of time underwater hunting for food.

HELPING THE CALIFORNIA SEA LION IN THE WILD

The Fort Wayne Zoo is a proud supporter of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in their work to rescue and rehabilitate stranded seals and California sea lions.

I AM IMPORTANT TO MY ECOSYSTEM

The California sea lion is an indicator species, meaning their health and wellbeing reflects that of their environment. This marine mammal eats a variety of species and changes in their diet can indicate negative changes in their ecosystem.
